Woman keeps baby in freezer for 10yrs

German prosecutors said on Tuesday they had opened a manslaughter investigation against a 49-year-old woman after the corpse of a new-born baby girl was found in her freezer after 10 years. The grisly find was made by her former husband on Friday when he defrosted the freezer in the house where they used to live, said prosecutors in the northern city of Flensburg. It was not clear whether the baby was alive or dead when placed in the freezer, investigators said. There were no signs she had been violently treated but authorities confirmed the baby was not stillborn. The woman, who has not been named, has admitted the baby was hers and said she was

“in a state of complete exhaustion and hopelessness” at the time.

The couple already had three, now fully grown, children and divorced in 2009, prosecutors said.

Ritualists kidnap girl; remove tongue, breasts, clitoris

Its Ember month and as usual the season for ritual activities.
Ritualists may have taken over Ogere, Ogun State, on Lagos-Sagamu expressway as a female victim on her way to Lagos from Port Harcourt was kidnapped and taken away at gun point for slaughter.

Her fresh corpse was later found close to the point where she was kidnapped two weeks later, with vital organs of her body, including tongue, breasts and clitoris missing.According to Vanguard this is the second of such incident occurring in the area in three weeks
The victim, Miss Tonia Ibelefa, 25, was travelling in company of two male relations in a private car when the incident occurred.
Eyewitness told Vanguard that the armed ritualists blocked the expressway, dragged the University of Port Harcourt graduate out of the car and took her into the bush, adding that the two male family members with the girl surrendered her at gun point.

“She is the one we want and you must surrender her,” the ritualists told the two men, according to the witness.

The witness said the matter was immediately reported to the police in the area who launched a manhunt for the criminals to no avail.

Messages were also said to have been sent to the girl’s family in Port Harcourt who also reported the case to the police who immediately declared a case of missing person.

Thinking that it was a case of kidnap, the family waited to hear from the abductors but got no information about her whereabout.

However, the ritualists last Thursday called the parents through the number obtained from their victim’s phone, advising them to pick up the corpse of their daughter at a junction very close to where the incident happened.

Elder sister of the deceased confirmed that that family had since recovered the corpse, which still looked very fresh at the time of recovery, giving an indication that she was not killed immediately she was kidnapped.

Nigeria’s First Lady Hospitalized In Germany

Nigeria's First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has been in a hospital in Germany in the last four days, Abuja State House sources have told SaharaReporters, undergoing treatment for food poisoning.
The sources say Mrs. Jonathan, who is also a Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State civil service, was airlifted to the hospital by an air ambulance in midweek under emergency medical conditions.
Presidency sources stated that the emergency airlift departed for Wisbanden, Germany, but it is not clear if her treatment was being undertaken in that city.  They said she was only able to speak earlier today, four days after her arrival, because the illness had been so severe that she lost her voice.
Our sources could not say when she will return to the country.  Nigeria’s political leaders and their families routinely seek expensive medical attention abroad, an irony occasioned by their failure to develop the same facilities at home.  In the past few years, two former First Ladies have died on foreign hospital beds.

Man caught at MMIA with cocaine in roasted chicken

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), yesterday arrested a man named Vincent Chinweuwa, for allegedly smuggling 2.655kg of cocaine hidden inside roasted chicken at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Vincent arrived MMIA on a Turkish Airline flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Chinweuwa said it took him three days to pack the cocaine inside the roasted chicken and was surprised that he was caught. Chinweuwa has been living in Brazil since 2006.

Floods:2children die in Minna

Two children, Basiru Kudu and Mustafa Kudu, died on Saturday while trying to cross a flooded drain in Minna.
The brothers, who had attended the graduation ceremony at their Islamiyya school, were drowned while trying to cross the drain on their way home in Tunga Ward of the state capital.
Eye witnesses said that the incident followed a down pour that lasted for about three hours,flooding most of the drains and roads in the area.
Eye witnesses said that their mother, who was with them raised alarm to attract rescuers who recovered the bodies of the children and rushed them to the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, where they were confirmed dead.
The Director General of Niger State Emergency Agency, Malam Mohammed Shaba confirmed the story and said the agency was investigating the incident.
 “I can confirm to you that children were drowned this afternoon in Minna

“The director of investigation has commenced investigation into the cause of the incident, and we will speak with the mother of the kids before we release further details on the incident.

“The agency will provide the necessary support for the family in line with our mandate, but we appeal to parents to keep vigil on their wards and stop them from going close to drains or water channel after down pour,“he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Pius Edobor also confirmed the story and said it was the first incident of drowning in Minna.

Man shoots son dead in failed ‘bullet proof’ charm test

In a bid to test the potency of his newly acquired bullet proof ‘juju’, a man, Ornguga Adega, of Agbatse village in Kwande local government area of Benue State, shot his only son dead  while conducting a gunshot test on the boy.

According to Vanguard the suspect, who was  immediately apprehended by men of the Benue State Police Command, is currently facing trial at a Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court.

According to the First Information Report, FIR, by the police, the suspect and father of the ten- year- old had, in August 2012, bought some charm from a native doctor with the belief that it was potent enough to prevent the penetration of bullets into his body.

He was said to have rubbed his ‘bullet proof’ cream on the body of his son in order to verify  its efficacy and potency in line with the instructions of the native doctor from whom he bought the charm.

According to the FIR,  Adega fired a shot with his single barrel gun on the right leg of his son following which the bullet shattered the leg and also penetrated through to the left leg.

The boy was said to have bled profusely but before his shocked and devastated father could get proper medical attention for him, the little boy bled to death.

When the case came up at the Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court, police prosecutor, Inspector Gabriel Egbonyi, said the accused was arrested at the process of investigating the cause of death of the young boy.

Egbonyi further told the court that the accused confessed to committing the crime and also acknowledged responsibility for the unfortunate incident which prompted further police  investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction. However the prosecution said investigation was still in progress in the matter and asked for another date for hearing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Dan Ogoh, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to 12 September.

Man behind Ilorin killer text messages arrested

The Kwara Police Command on Friday arrested a man alleged to be circulating `killer’ text messages to the public.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Kayode Fabode, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin that the man (names withheld) was being interrogated.
Fabode urged members of the public to ignore the messages, saying there was no iota of truth in them.
The police spokesman said that the man had been sending text messages claiming that four people who answered calls from a certain GSM number had died in Ilorin and Omu-Aran.
The number according to the police belongs to a girl who was preaching to the suspect to accept Christ.
The police spokesman said that the claims in the text messages were untrue, and advised members of the public to ignore them and go about their normal businesses.
Fabode said that no death connected with the use of GSM calls had been reported in Ilorin or Omu-Aran by anyone.
“It is not true that people have died because they received or picked their calls on phone, particularly in Kwara,’’ he said.
He said that police investigations led to the arrest of the suspected originator of the text messages, who is a student of a tertiary institution in the state.
According to him, the reported claims of death in Egbe, Ilorin and Omu-Aran are not true.
The text messages had created anxiety among the people in Omu-Aran and Ilorin.

3 year old girl raped at Adeniji Adele (Photos)

This incident happened yesterday afternoon at Adeniji Adele, Dolphin Estate, Phase 2. A little girl ran into a woman's shop crying. The woman asked her why she was crying, but the little girl couldn't really express herself. She just kept pointing at a particular direction, and crying. Then a few minutes later, the shop owner saw a man approaching her shop and calling on the girl to follow him. The woman asked the man who he was and why he was after the girl. The man probably realized the women wasn't going to release the girl to him, so he tried to run. The woman raised an alarm immediately shouting ole ole, thinking he was a kidnapper, not knowing he had done something much worse.

Youths in the area thinking the man was a thief descended on him. The man kept saying he wasn't a thief that the little girl was known to him. They turned to the girl and pressured her to tell them what the guy had done to her; the 3 year old told them that the man had taken her to the last floor of a 3 story building and hurt her. They checked the girl's panties and saw blood all over her private area. The blood had even dropped to her legs but nobody noticed on time.

On hearing this, the youths descended on him once again, this time more brutal. They stripped him naked, and beat him with stick, stones, bottles, etc until someone called the police who then took the man away.

Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) fire outbreak (photos)

The fire affected the Direct Observation Therapy Centre for Tuberculosis of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Idi Araba, Lagos. No patient was trapped in the fire outbreak that affected the building.
The fire was said to have been caused by an electric spark.
The fire reportedly raged for over an hour while fire fighters were said to have responded after a number of distress calls were made.

Ebonyi police arrest 7 for 7-year-old's murder

The victim was allegedly killed for ritual purposes
Officers of the Ebonyi State Police Command, on Tuesday, announced the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the murder of a 7-year-old girl, Ukamaka Ogboji.

The victim was allegedly killed for ritual purposes on Sunday at Agubia in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects had earlier kidnapped Ogboji for monetary gains, and then dismembered her body parts before dumping same in a cassava farm.

The State Police Command spokesperson, Sylvester Igbo, while confirming the arrest of the suspects, commended the community youth organisation known as Ebonyi Youth Assembly for their assistance towards the arrest of the suspects.

Igbo revealed that two of the suspects had already confessed to the crime, adding that the police had commenced full investigation to ascertain the motive behind the brutal killing of the deceased.

“What we have observed at the scene made us to attribute the killing to ritual killing and not kidnapping, because the corpse of the deceased was without two legs, hands and eyes,” he said.

“From the act, it is a ritual killing. Through police investigation, we have been able to arrest seven suspects, among whom two have confessed to the crime. One of them confessed that his mother was the spiritual mother of the girl when she was baptised.”

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Monday he would prove critics of his administration wrong by 2013 when the dividends of new policies introduced begin to manifest.

Jonathan said this while declaring open the 52nd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja.

He said he was the most criticised President in the world at the moment because his critics failed to understand that the country’s current challenges predated his administration.

He assured that his critics would have the cause to praise him at the end of the life of his administration when his Transformation Agenda would have yielded the expected dividends.

“I think I am the most criticised president in the whole world, but I tell this noble audience that before I leave, I will also be the most praised president.
“I have experienced that before in my governor journey in Bayelsa state. In fact, people who were close to me will tell you that even after the election, I told them that in my first 12 months please cover your ears because you will hear all kinds of things. But as we progress, you will see (changes).

“We are working very hard to stabilise power. We are working very hard to resurface our roads. We have security challenges, which we are also working very hard to bring to reasonable control.

“It is not easy; we don’t have the magic wand, except the miracle worker that with the wave of the hand, probably will help to throw all these challenges away and prosperity will appear. But in pure governance issues, it takes time.

“Sometimes, even people who have held offices in government criticise me to the extent of personal abuses. Sometimes I ask, were there roads across in the country and Jonathan brought flood to wipe out these roads? or we had power and I brought hurricane to break down the entire infrastructure?

“If they say Boko Haram is because of poverty; were there massive irrigation projects in the North where agriculture can thrive and massive farms, and Jonathan brought drought to wipe out these farms? under two years is it possible?

“Well, time will tell. What I can tell Nigerians is that let those who criticize continue to criticise..we will do our best and as we progress, Nigerians will know the truth and we’ll see that we are committed and will surely transform this country,’’ he said
The President said that he promised to deliver free, fair and credible elections before the conduct of the 2011 general elections and the assessment of the polls by local and international observers was a testimony that he kept his promise.

Nigerian sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Malaysia

A Malaysian court on Sunday sentenced a Nigerian man to death after convicting him of trafficking more than 14 kilos (31 pounds) of marijuana over the land border with Thailand, a report said.

The court said there was little doubt Moses Chinedu Nwosu, 50, was guilty of the crime — punishable with death by hanging — after the drugs were seized from him on the night of March 25 last year, Bernama news agency said.

The man’s lawyer could not be reached for comment.

The accused testified the drugs carried in a black bag belonged to another man he was travelling with from the Thai border to the northern Malaysian town of Alor Setar, Bernama said citing the judgment.

“However, according to a witness, Moses was seen carrying the black bag… and its key was found in his pocket,” the judge said.

The court decision is the latest in a clampdown by Malaysian authorities on alleged foreign drug traffickers.

A Kuala Lumpur court charged 10 Iranians, an Uzbek and a local with trafficking methamphetamine last week.

An Australian nurse and Nigerian man were also charged with trafficking drugs last month, a case which has attracted media attention worldwide.

Since 1960, more than 440 people have been executed in Malaysia, including two Australians sentenced to death in 1986 for heroin trafficking — the first Westerners to be executed under tough anti-drug laws.

How Police Corporal killed self after shooting wife, daughters

The ugly incident that took place last Sunday at Edda village in Ugwuachara, Ebonyi local government area in Ebonyi State has been described by many as black Sunday. This is as a result of the horrific scenario that occurred in a compound, located directly behind Kings and Queen primary and secondary school, along Onwa Ali Onwa street of the State.

The event which took place in the morning hours of the fateful day led to the death of Corporal Anthony Ugwuoke who shot himself after shooting his wife, Mrs. Nkechi, 30, at the neck and shoulder, and his two daughters, Adaeze, 3, and chidinma, 1, on the hand and leg respectively.

When Crime Guard visited the scene of the incident, occupants of the compound had deserted the area for fear of being arrested by the police as only two persons were seen in the compound discussing the ugly episode which took place on August 19,2012.

Speaking with Crime Guard, the wife of the deceased who is presently receiving treatment at the Female Surgical Ward of Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA, looked visibly confused and wondered why her husband committed suicide by shooting himself on the chest.

The woman, who was still nursing bullet wounds, looked upon God and the medical personnels for the restoration of her health and that of her two children. According to her, she will always love and forgive her husband despite the ugly incident that happened to her.

Recounting her ordeal,she said: “That Sunday, my husband told me that he wanted to go to my place with his friend for condolence visit. After he finished preparing, he told me that he was ready to go and I said okay, when you are coming back, please help me bring one of my sisters, a nine-year-old girl, from the village who will be helping me out with domestic work. After I said this, he got angry and started saying that he was not bringing anybody; that he did not marry me for anybody and that he was not even going to my place anymore. And he insisted that I should pack my things and go. I was surprised because as at that morning, we have not had any quarrel or fight. As he was quarreling, his friend who came to escort him to my place told him that it has not gotten to that and that he should take it easy.

“But my husband insisted that I should pack my things and go. So, based on the advice of his friend, I decided to gradually gather my things including my clothing. Then the friend left the house to go and take care of his family. I had the premonition to tell him to stay in the house but I didn’t.So, by the time he left, I started gathering my things, then my husband told me to only collect my clothes and forget about that of the children. In fact, that I should leave the children with him, if they die let them die. So, as I continued gathering my clothes, my husband came and said that I should select only the ones I bought with my money, and leave behind the ones he bought for me.

“In the process, I don’t know what came over him, he rushed to the door and locked it with key. Before I could realize what was happening, he started beating me and then he brought out a pistol and shot me on the neck and on my shoulders, shot my two daughters and shot himself on the chest.”
Mrs. Nkechi who is from Ikwo local government area of the state advised her fellow women to mind the way they treat their husbands, considering her present predicament and appealed to the State government to come to her rescue by assisting her train the children and pay their hospital bills.

“My advice is that as they have seen my condition and what has happened, they should watch the way they treat their husband. My appeal to the state government is that they should come to my aid to assist me train my children. I will forever forgive my husband; despite what has happened, I still love him.” (starts crying).

One of the neighbors who pleaded anonymity described the wife of the deceased as very quiet and respectable person. She noted that “the wife teaches at the school behind the yard, Kings and Queen’s nursery and primary school. She just came back from the village about a week ago after she left the house about three weeks because the husband beat her up and chased her out of the house, giving her big injury on the eyes.”

Another neighbor who also did not want his name mentioned said the deceased (Mr. Ugwuoke who hails from Nsukka in Enugu State) was possessed with bad spirit. He described him as an arrogant policeman who usually misbehaves and beats up his wife on a regular bases. According to him: “When I returned from church, I noticed that the compound was unusually quiet. Then I met a neighbor who told me what had transpired.

The late corporal has not been a good neighbor; he has always been beating up the wife. At one time, I intervened and I even fought with the man because of this his behavior. I even took the caretaker and one other tenant and we went to police station last October to report the matter to the DPO; that in case the man killed somebody in the yard, none of the tenants should be held responsible.

“The man is like possessed with bad spirit because he doesn’t greet anybody. He doesn’t go to church. It is even recently that we got to know his name despite the fact that he was one of the first tenants that packed into this yard. Also he was in the habit of smoking Indian hemp.”

The Divisional Police Officer,DPO, Kpirikpiri Police Station, Superintendent Sampson Etta who wondered why the late Corporal decided to end his life by committing suicide, noted that he (Ugwuoke) shot his wife at the upper shoulder and at the back of the neck, while his children sustained various degree of injuries at the leg and hand resulting from gun shots.

According to him, the police on receiving information about the gruesome act, rushed to the scene, rescued the wife and children to the Federal Teaching Hospital, FETHA, where they are receiving medical attention.

Etta stressed that there was no need for the occupants residing where the Corporal committed suicide to be on the ran as it was clear that nobody had a hand in his death. He called on them to remain law abiding and go about their businesses.

It should be recalled that on August 19, a police corporal, Mr. Anthony Ugwoke attached to B’ operations in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state and an orderly to a High Court Judge (name withheld) shot himself dead after shooting his 30 year old wife, Mrs. Nkechi Ugwuoke and his two daughters.

Meanwhile, speculations are still rife that the deceased committed the dastardly act under certain level of influence.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ebonyi state command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, Sylvester Igbo who confirmed the incident, said the body of the deceased had been deposited in the mortuary of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA.

According to Mr. Igbo, one berretta pistol, expended shells and one live ammunition were recovered from the scene. He said the command had begun full scale investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to the incident.
