UNIUYO Riot: 3 students confimed dead (Photos)

The Engineering students of University of Uyo went for a peaceful demonstration at the office of the Vice Chancellor in other to address issues about the sudden changes made by the V.C concerning their transportation from Uniuyo Main Campus to Uniuyo Permanent Site.
The Vice Chancellor decided that students who want to board the school bus from Main camp to Permanent site for lectures had to pay N100 daily before using the school bus that was free. Some complained that the GST fee N2,000k was too much. So other faculty students joined the protest.

They led a peaceful demonstration to the V.C's Office to lay their complains about the sudden change. On arrival the security officials at the V.C's office tried to stop the students from gaining access to the Vice Chancellor, the students therefore retaliated by throwing stones at the security officials and blocked Ikot Ekpene road .
The security officials had no option but to call for back-up which led to the riot . The police who were supposed to calm the situation fired shots at the students and killed three innocent students, one has been identified as Kingsley a 200 level student of the department of zoology . The students on the other hand destroyed school properties, set the office of the V.C,  the school main gate and a hostel on fire. The rampage went on for hours. The school has been closed down till further notice.

  6. Isn't it funny how d students who are rioting becos of 100 naira and 2000k suddenly have enough money to buy fuel to burn down buildings and properties. They have money to party and club but common 2100k cost their lives. Penny wise pound foolish!

  9. It is rather sad that our children wouldn't take things easy, if you are denied access why dont you shout and wait for the VC? She certainly wont stay in there forever! And the school authority was so busy It couldn't drag itself to hear the complaints of the children, when in this school we the children are the most important assets and should be of great priority to the management, I wonder why Nigerian police are always on the side of screaming stupidity and sheer madness! Three children!!! Tommorrow the police will claim self defence! To the roughly departed, Rest in peace! God alone can and will console the families!

  13. I strongly sympathise wt those who lost their lives. I graduated from Unical and trust me,I learnt that it is never the best to resort to violence to protest a case. I had to pay dearly for what I wasn't involved and also had to stay extra 6months before graduating. My dear friends, pls let's not support violence. Interstngly,u will all have to pay dearly evn tho u were involved or not. I also don't support the stupid policemen for shooting cos der wud ve been a better way to dismiss d protesters. Who knows hw long it will take to reopen and wat will it cost? Let's just be wise. Rest in peace dear friends.

  16. We wnt a new VC the current one is not doing anything she changed everything imagine paying 100 naira to and fro in a semester how much will you have left and wat if you have 2 lectures in a day and have to go to your room to pick up something that's like 400 naira is it fair?

  17. Most of you commenting on this blog are bunches of ignorant fools. You comment to stories with unverified facts. All the media keep saying 3 or 4 students died, yet its only 1 name mentioned. Mind you, the Vc was not in office throughout the incidence and the protesting students didn't make any attempt towards her office. Now you accuse the SUG when the president was there through out pleading that the students should take it easy while they engage the management and transport company on the fare issue. I am one of the 200L Engineering students that started the problem initially, but after the SUG president addressed us, I tried callming down my collegues who were already carried away in the so-called activism. You allknow that touts easilly hijack situations like this. I condemn the actions of the police to fire directly on the Nigerian students. There has been over 15 cases of acute asthma attacks as a result of the teargas canisters fired into the s school. I was going round with the SUG President when he visited those injured students at the health centre and when he came back to beg students not to throw stones at the police because he does not want more casualties. Now, we have lost a student and several others injured. We will have to pay God knows how much for damages, stay at home for God knows how long, and sign undertaking to abide by God knows what policies the management will eventually make. One think I have learnt from all is this today, and I would agree withthe SUG president is that "dialogue does not mean cowardice". Good morning.
    Bitter Lesson

  18. The students went for a peaceful demonstration n were denied access to the school authorities although the VC was not in town someone else would have stood in for her. We, in the permanent site of the University suffer a lot in terms of transportation and moving another faculty there means hell for us the "LAND LORDS" and the new student. The sum of #200 per day may not be anything to some students but to others it may be a fortune. The authorities should have considered that! For the students that lost their lives in the course of fighting for their rights I pray the Almighty God grants them eternal rest. The authorities shouldn't have moved the faculty of science to permanent site without making proper arrangements.

  19. @Mimi, you dont make conclusions without having to know the facts.
How can the VC slam a N200 daily fare on a government intervention bus that all she needs to do is to fuel the bus from the huge tuition fee this students pays.

How can you subject the students to pay an extra N2000 per semester for GST courses?

That's what happens when a woman is given power...an abuse of privilege. Tomorrow, they'll be crying "Gender inequality".

The Uniyo VC is not competent and she does not even possess enough experience needed to occupy the position of Vice chanceloship. How on earth will someone have expected students to spend N400 on Transport every day. They should have looked for Former DVC Academics and lynched him for he suggested all the wicked things.

No matter how mosquito bites, do not use matchete to kill it.

Violence could be used to bring a solution to a matter.

Peaceful dialogues could also be used. But the truth is that, each of the two ways has its implications.

Violence is a bad achiever of a solution.

*It's wrong to throw stones on your authority.

*It's wrong to shot at your dear students.

*It's wrong to kill the innocent.

  27. there is always a price to pay to play the game my darlings. Uniuyo students should stop acting as if they are the only ones take go to school in 9ja. u can never hear this happened in UI or OAU or even Uniben because those guys pay the price for their dreams and desires. buck up guys! this na 9ja! 200 naira for a school bus of course for a school bus is too high but money spent on tropicana and BB packages make sense abi? and if u're looking for someone to blame, start from ur families. ur fathers, ur mothers and all ur uncles and aunties and cousins. the govt of this country that is corrupt come from our families not space. the policeman who shot students was someone's dad. maybe his child is even in this same spineless uniuyo.well now that u've burnt down the VCs office and Exams and records goodluck graduating. good luck to u guys who wud need grades soon. sebi you would all look for whom to blame later on for that cuz lailai uniuyo students are worthy...abi na? peaceful protest and u threw stones?!!! uniuyo students are indeed the odunyos of the century. i pity the employer that has to pick workers out of u bunch. 2013. the height of the tech age and yet a simple protest u guys could not follow thru.

They feel that its all about ac car to ac house to ac office n making foolish decisns. God wil judge nigerian leaders. However its gud dat they r rioting. When it happend in unical, they called us names that we like fighting. Nw its the same course that those unfortunate souls fot 4.
